Golf clubs will 'inevitably' have to allow women members, Gloucestershire members say

GOLF clubs with men-only membership policies such as Muirfield will one day have to change.

That is the view of members at golf clubs in the county, who say a more all-inclusive outlook is inevitable.

Muirfield, which is currently hosting the Open Championship, is among a select number of UK golf courses which only men can join.

The Royal and Ancient (R&A), which runs the tournament, has cited the club's right to the freedom of association as a defence for the policy.

But golfers in Gloucestershire say single sex golf clubs are a dying breed.

Rob Ovens, general manager at Cotswold Hills Golf Club, in Ullenwood, said: "Obviously this issue is something the media has fastened onto and it has attracted a lot of attention.

"I think one day it is inevitable that clubs like Muirfield will fall into line with everyone else because they are coming under increasing pressure."

Nathan Ballard, who works at Brickhampton Court Golf Complex, in Staverton, added: "It's not like years gone by where the men used to head off to the golf club for the day and leave the wives at home.

"Nowadays they come along with their wives, which makes it more sociable for everyone."
