A DOG has been put down after attacking a woman in Lydney.

She was bitten on the arms on Wednesday afternoon as she walked along Allastone Road.

Neighbours reported hearing the woman scream as the dog leapt at her and sank its teeth into her.

The 45-year-old victim from Lydney was left with several deep puncture wounds to both arms.

Resident Alan Ward witnessed the attack from his home in the road and dialled 999 for help immediately.

He said: "I didn't go too close as I was frightened and had to stay on the line to the ambulance but I could see the dog jumping up at her.

"She was screaming and shouting 'go away'.

"Some other people stopped their cars to help her and I could see blood on the ground."

A spokesman for the ambulance service said paramedics treated the victim at the scene.

They added that she did not have to be taken to hospital for further treatment.

Police said the Rhodesian Ridgeback cross had escaped from a nearby garden.

A spokesman said: "It latched on to her left forearm.

"She had about six puncture wounds on her left arm and three on her right arm.

"A passerby alerted the owner and by the time police arrived the dog had been secured in a crate."

Officers said the dog was clearly 'out of control' and they requested it be destroyed.

The next day they said the 24-year-old man who owed it was 'deeply remorseful' for what had happened and had agreed to have the dog destroyed.

Lydney town and district councillor Valerie Hobman said it was a 'sad' situation.

She had to have her mongrel dog put down after it bit her nine-year-old nephew several years ago.

She said: "Unfortunately once dogs have bitten they are likely to bite again.

"In the hot weather they do get very uncomfortable.

"But people should keep their animals under control.

"It's a shame this has happened."
