THE proposed housing development for St Paul's should contain terraced houses rather than detached ones, according to Cheltenham's architectural guardians.
Cheltenham Borough Homes plans to build 56 homes in Crabtree Place.
The new houses are part of a £7.2 million scheme.
But Cheltenham's Civic Society has expressed concerns, saying terraced homes would be better in the area.
It stated: "Aesthetically, we would prefer terraces throughout and are not entirely happy with the design of the detached houses.
"For the flats we would prefer something more akin to what has been done at Manser Street."
The homes have been put forward by the housing association with Kier Partnership Homes.
It will see 100 new houses built in the St Paul's area of town and could be completed by 2015 if on schedule.
The plans include 24 affordable homes for rent with 10 three-bedroom houses, 10 two-bedroom flats and four one-bedroom apartments.
In December 2009, work began on phase one of the site, which included 48 new homes in Manser Street and Hudson Street. Tenants are anticipated to be moving into those homes shortly.
Paul Stephenson, chief executive of the housing association, believes the new homes will make a positive difference to the lives of those in the area.
But not everyone agrees.
The Wright family says the regeneration scheme will force them out of their home of 25 years.
They are one of the few residents living in the area and say they are being ordered out against their will.
They have been offered alternative accommodation in The Moors estate or in Rowanfield, but the family fear it would disrupt their 15-year-old daughter Lacey's schooling.
Other residents have welcomed the project.
Brian Burrows, who lives in St Paul's, said: "It's obviously going to be difficult for people who have to move out, but when it's done, it should be an improvement."
A decision should be made by September 4.
