RESTORATION work to Cheltenham's historic Pittville Gates reaches a significant landmark today.

A giant overmantle, which used to sit proudly over the gates, will be hoisted into place this morning.

It marks a significant step in phase one of the £280,000 works to revamp the gates.

The revamp has been carried out by members of the Friends of Pittville, who have been tirelessly fundraising for it.

Plans were first touted more than two years ago.

First erected in 1833, harsh weather conditions had left the gates in desperate need for repairs.

Phase one of the work started last November, which included the gates being dismantled.

New pillars, renovated ironwork and enhanced landscaping including new pavements will breathe new life into the grade two listed location.

Judie Hodsdon, chairman of the Friends' restoration project sub committee, said: "This is an important and significant step towards the end of the phase one of the works.

"The arch was first put up in 1897 when it was the park was first made public.

"As part of the project, we had to take down the arch, to make sure it will be better than before. It is a splendid that is now going back on, and we can't wait for it really."

The work on the over-mantle, which was carried out by Cheltenham building company AmPm247, cost the friends about £25,000.

The work included replacing the metal pigeon which used to sit on the top of the arch.

It represented the day when spa water was found in the town.

"We had advice to strengthen the over-mantle, and we wanted to make sure it was impressive when it went back on," Ms Hodsdon said.

The Friends are still looking to raise about £80,000 for the project. The missing lanterns, gates, and railings are yet to be fitted.

Ms Hodsdon added: "When we finally get it completed, we will hold a grand opening.

"It is an iconic part of Cheltenham, and important not just to the people in Pittville, but everyone in the town."
