SAINTBRIDGE allotments are well on track to be in full bloom by 2014.

In November 2011, thousands of pounds worth of tools and a memorial bench were destroyed in an arson attack in the area.

Last year a planning application was successful for a new storage container, along with a new parking area.

And on Friday the scalping arrived in order for work on two areas of hardstanding to begin.

Volunteers have already created two parking areas with the rubble and also maintained a path between Saintbridge and Coney Hill.

Marilyn McKechnie, chair of the Friends of Saintbridge Ponds, said: "I would say we are halfway to completing the development now.

"We have already dug up the community allotments with a JCB and now the hardstanding is down too, creating a dozen or so parking spaces.

"We now want to create an area of green space that the community can hold events on and we also want to create an allotment solely for disabled people as well."

Back in June last year, a group called GL4 Together was formed in a bid to raise the necessary funds to replace the container and volunteers have also received an anonymous donation of £1,000.

GL4 Together are organising a fun day on Sunday September 8 to raise additional funds for the Friends of Saintbridge Pond and Saintbridge Allotments and Gardens Association.

In June, Friends of Saintbridge Pond hope to deliver the storage container which has been funded through the Coney Hill Neighbourhood Community Fund.

"It is all about the people," added Marilyn.

"It is the drive of the volunteers that has created what we have so far and it is there drive that will see this project through to the end in 2014."
