DANGEROUS parking outside Park Infant and Junior schools is being dealt with after a mum was knocked down by a hit-and-run driver.
Claire Kennaby was crossing the road outside the school gates in Stonehouse with her two children when a motorist reversed a maroon Peugeot 206 into her.
It left Claire in agony and needing surgery and her two children shaken up. The driver has never been caught.
Now metal bollards have been placed across the entrance to the school in Elm Road to prevent vehicles from using it as a turning circle.
Claire said: "What happened was frightening and it's left me in a lot of pain.
"I wouldn't wish this on anyone else and I'm grateful to everyone who is helping make the changes outside the school.
"I hope other mums and dads will support it so that we can keep our kids safe."
Some drivers have been parking illegally on the area outside the old youth club at peak times, next to the entrance the children use. The road becomes congested and potentially dangerous quickly during the morning and afternoon.
So pupils, parents, teachers from both schools joined forces with police, Gloucestershire Road Safety Partnership and Stroud District Council to launch a new initiative to help keep children safe when arriving and leaving school.
As well as the bollards, parents can request a permit to use the public car park on the High Street free-of-charge between 8.30am and 9.30am and 2.45pm and 3.45pm on weekdays.
So-called clean graffiti footprints will also be painted along a safe route for pupils to follow from the car park to the school.
