Huge cannabis find as man in Forest of Dean arrested

A MASSIVE cannabis farm worth up to £21,000 has been cracked by cops.

More than 70 plants were seized in a raid in the Forest of Dean last week, in the latest crackdown on drugs in the area.

It's a further dent to the supply of illegal substances in the county and comes just a week after Gloucester drugs baron PJ Maguire was jailed for seven-and- a-half years after masterminding a £200,000 cocaine ring.

He is not linked to the latest raid, which is the most recent find by Gloucestershire police's Operation Rapier team, tasked with clamping down on drugs in the Forest.

They found the plants and arrested a man at an address in Edmund Road, in Sedbury, last Thursday.

They discovered the plants and dried herbal matter in the garage of the house. A 51-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of class B drugs cultivation in connection and was bailed until July 16.

PC Duncan Sleeman said: "Some 71 plants were confiscated. There were over 20 mature plants, over 40 in a mid-stage of growth and the rest were seedlings.

"If this set-up had gone on to give a crop of fully grown plants a conservative estimate of value on the streets would be £12,000 to £21,000. This is yet another piece of good work by the team.

"The community is reacting brilliantly to the operation and law-abiding residents have been very happy to see us wherever we have gone.

"I hope it encourages people to carry on giving us information. Where we have information we can act on, we will."

Operation Rapier has already led to numerous other drugs raids and arrests in Coleford, Lydney, Cinderford and elsewhere in the district.

It comes on the back of police secruing a conviction against Abbeymead cocaine ring mastermind PJ Maguire.

Detective Inspector Ian Fletcher, of the force's crime operations unit, said efforts to clamp down on drugs are starting to pay off in Gloucester too.

"We have had great success in putting people before the courts for supply of class A drugs but cocaine is only one of several substances we are currently striving to combat in Gloucester," he said.

"In particular, cannabis and methedrone are very popular at the moment."
