SCOUTS celebrated their troop's centenary with that most traditional of fun events – a camp in the great outdoors.

Members of Selsley Scouts and Cubs slept in tents beneath the stars at the local cricket club.

The younger Beavers spent the weekend bedded down in the nearby Selsley Scout HQ.

Group president Lawrie Hall said about 60 boys and girls joined in and some parents even stayed over.

Selsley Scouts, founded in 1913, or even maybe in 1912, then welcomed members' families, friends and visitors from the community to an open day on Saturday.

Stroud MP Neil Carmichael officially launched the event.

Mr Hall said the Tory politician had been a Cub as a lad but confessed that he had later progressed into the Air Training Corps instead of the Scouts.

Typical activities demonstrated by the youngsters from the Selsley troop included woggle making.

While in contrast there was the more up-to-date chance to calculate your global footprint, Mr Hall said.

He said: "We had a camp fire, talent competition and tug of war. Also an assault course, canoeing down on the canal and archery."

Gloucestershire county and Stroud district commissioners for Scouts Paul Trott and Paula Pitcher attended.

Mr Hall said: "Originally, Selsley Scouts met at Stanley Hall.

"They lapsed between the wars and were reformed immediately after the Second World War by Burnal Hogg, known as Skip."
