CHEESES rolled around Randwick churchyard in glorious sunshine as a prelude to the village's mapcap Wap.

Organiser Simon Vincent said there was a huge turnout for Sunday's cheeserolling at St John the Baptist's and he thanked the Women's Institute for putting on a great spread for the day.

The Wap starts at 12.45pm this Saturday with a costumed procession and fair which dates back to the Middle Ages.

The event was revived in 1972 by then vicar of Randwick, the late Rev Nial Morrison.

The procession involves a host of characters parading towards a pond and the dunking the Wap Mayor with a Mop Man clearing a way through the crowd which traditionally lines the route.

Michael Cratchley has the questionable honour of being submerged as Mayor this year with Maureen Keogh playing the Mop Man and Rachael Rutter as the Queen of the May.

Cheeses will be rolled again to mark the fair's 2pm start with a range of stalls, competitions and displays ranging from dog display team Paws For Thought and Daphne Neville's otters to martial arts from the Cotswolds School of Shaolin.

Festivities continue into the night at the Vine Tree from 8pm with B-Spoke and performances from Wap personalities.
