Gloucester farmers caught in Egypt protests 'safe and well'

COUNTY farmers caught up between feuding Egyptian families came through their ordeal unscathed.

A busload of members from the Gloucester Farmers' Dining Club, on holiday in the country, was among 630 tourists held for seven hours at visitor attraction Abu Simbel.

They were looked after by tour guides while attempts were made to pacify protesters blocking the only road out of the site.

It is believed a dispute between rival families led to the protest, after one member was injured in a long-running dispute over a piece of land.

The situation was evolving on Friday, amid reports that terrorists were involved somehow. But that proved not to be the case.

One of the Dining Club group, Richard Chapman, who owns Manor Farm in Longney, said yesterday: "They were held for about seven hours but everyone is safe and well. They were very well looked after by our tour guides – it was a bit of an unknown quantity at the time because they didn't really know what was going on or how long they would be kept there."

Richard and his wife managed to avoid the drama by catching an internal flight to Abu Simbel, rather than the coach the rest of the party took.

"Everyone was quite relaxed in the end, I don't think anyone's life was ever in danger," he said.

"As far as we know, the protesters were demanding the police do more to protect them after this dispute led to someone getting injured, but it's still quite unclear.

"Nobody is any worse off, we missed a trip we were supposed to be going on, but that's about it."

The group of about 20 farmers, men and women, is on a cruise and is now back on board the ship.

They are due to head back to Gloucestershire on Wednesday.

The Gloucester Farmers' Dining Club meets in Kingsholm regularly.
