A CYCLIST has died in the annual Severn Bridge Road Race.

The 41st annual event was abandoned yesterday after a cyclist was involved in a crash with a car on the third lap of 10.

Gloucester's Steve Jones, a British Cycling volunteer, refereed the meet and it was his decision to abandon the race.

He said: "It has never been abandoned in the past, but I felt it was the right decision to make in the circumstances.

"I don't know the exact details of what happened but I understand Avon police are now investigating."

The popular race attracts top cyclists every year who race for a share of the prize fund - this year totalling £2,000.

Riders from all over the south west, including Gloucestershire, take part in the annual race.
