Dan Thomas didn't leave any stones unturned. Having swapped the black of Hartpury for the cherry and white of Gloucester, he has barged his way firmly into the limelight and wants another taste of the big-time.

If you want to make an impression, two tries in two outings is definitely the way to do it. Life goes on but now, at least, he has made a name for himself.

It's a different world these days. Hartpury's training base is swarming with rugby talent from all age groups and genders. The academy players are the ones talked about more often but Alan Martinovic, the Saturday team's director of rugby, is not just breeding a new generation of Gloucester thoroughbreds.

Nigel Davies was the man who put faith in him. His connections with the Scarlets meant Thomas wasn't forgotten when he was released by the RABO12 set-up.

His time under the Welshman's guidance was short-lived, however, but Thomas says he has his eyes set on making it at Kingsholm. There's no chance he will let this opportunity slip through his fingers.

"I have never played in front of a crowd like Kingsholm," Thomas said. "To get a couple of tries made it special. My main ambition is to play for Gloucester as much as I can but it is good to play for Hartpury and with Alan.

"We have a good relationship with the coaches and we have sat down and looked at the positives and the negatives in my game. I am obviously pleased to be back with Hartpury after two weeks with Gloucester and to continue to do the same for them."

It was a new experience for the 20-year-old, who crossed once against the Ospreys and then again against Harlequins, was made a candidate for the LV= competition's break-through player.

There is more work to do however. Martinovic wants his younger players to work on reverting to the basics to complement their sparks of genius.

"He is a very talented player," he said of Thomas. "But he knows there are areas of his game that can still be improved.

"What people perhaps don't appreciate and realise is the rugby programme we have at Hartpury is massive.

"We have a number of teams here and what we have tried to do over the last few years is create a situation where they can become interdependent.

"By doing that, our guys can identify with players at Hartpury and those representing Hartpury.

"We know he can be exceptional but sometimes it's about doing the right things better. If he can do that, I am sure he will have a great future."

And he isn't the only one. The likes of Steph Reynolds, Joe Batley, Lewis Ludlow, Ross Moriarty – they are all waiting in the wings.

Thomas has been re-called for Hartpury again this weekend. They play host to National One league-leaders Ealing Trailfinders, who will challenge the college team's hope of continuing their nine-match winning stretch.

Above all, Thomas says he is enjoying his rugby again.

"I didn't really have an option (to leave Scarlets)," he continued. "I obviously knew Nigel from my time at the Scarlets and I am very grateful for what he did for me.

"I received a phone call from him to see if I wanted to join Gloucester and, although it was a bit unlucky that he had to leave, I know I have a job to do here now.

"This group is gelling. I don't want to go out there as an individual when I play for Hartpury however – we're a team and that's what I must concentrate on.

"I know Aled Thomas well from my time at the Scarlets and there are obviously some well-established Welsh players in the Gloucester squad.

"It was a big sacrifice for my parents when I came up here to play. But there was always a plan for me and we knew the rugby would come first."

The former dairy farmer misses his days working with his father but rugby has always been his dream. And Hartpury is a tremendous place to learn his trade, even when he is out of contention for Gloucester.

"To be fair, Hartpury are playing to a very good standard," he said. "They have a young group of boys and they may not be as strong as some of the bigger guys but we hold our own.

"We went on a bad run of games last year but the team is doing well now. It is good to get back into a routine. I am really enjoying my rugby."
