'Invaluable' Brockworth father jailed for unleashing violent attack which left his partner covered in blood

Terrified mum Emma Walden feared she would die when her partner stormed into her Brockworth home and began kicking and punching her, a court heard.

Ms Walden was sitting on her sofa when drunken Matthew Power let himself into her home and unleashed the violent attack which left her covered in blood, Gloucester crown court was told.

During the attack Power, 50, rang up her mother to tell her what he was doing, said Julian Kesner, prosecuting.

It was feared at first that Ms Walden had suffered a fractured skull but thankfully a CT scan found nothing was broken, he added. She did suffer injuries including going deaf in one ear for two weeks afterwards.

At first she did not want any more to do with Power but has since changed her mind and the relationship has resumed, the court heard.

Power, of Hebden close, Brockworth, admitted assaulting his partner on May 27 last year causing her actual bodily harm and was jailed for 14 months.

"It was a terrifying ordeal for her and she feared, quite understandably, for her life," said Judge Euan Ambrose. "Photographs taken by the police after this attack show there was blood covering her hands and face."

Mr Kesner alleged Power was wearing steel capped work boots as he kicked Ms Walden, but the defence said he was actually wearing trainers.

"They had been in a relationship for five years and had a four-year-old son," he said. "She says that normally she got on well with Mr Power and she described him as her best friend. But there were other aspects of the relationship which had all the hallmarks of domestic abuse. She describes him as controlling everything so life was lead on his terms.

"In particular he didn't like her going out for long without him."

When Power stormed in on May 27, he was 'screaming at her' and lashing out, Mr Kesner said.

"He started kicking her while she was still sitting on the sofa. He kicked her several times in the face and punched her as well.

"He then rang her mother, who was looking after their son, and said he was beating her daughter up. She says he was ranting and raving down the phone.

"Shortly afterwards he rang her mother again and said she had fallen over and was bleeding. Her mother spoke to her and asked her to call the police, which she did. Officers arrived and arrested the defendant."

Ms Walden told one of the officers: "I can't believe how many times he punched and kicked me in the face."

Jeremy Jones, defending, said Power's attack was prompted by his annoyance and frustration that Ms Walden had been 'drinking all day.'

But Judge Ambrose said: "That may sound better from him if he had not had eight pints of beer himself that day. He was not in a very strong position to criticise her for drinking too much."

Mr Jones said Power rarely drinks to excess and is a hard working man and supportive father.

"Immediiate imprisonment would cause interminible suffering to his son," he submitted.

Judge Ambrose said it had been such a serious assault that only immediate jail could be justified - even though Ms Walden had described him as an 'invaluable and great dad.'

"I am told that she has now had a change of heart and the relationship has resumed," he added.
