Safety of pedestrians in Kingsholm Road could be improved by changes to a zebra crossing which can often be ignored by drivers.

The crossing outside the Spar shop in Kingsholm Road is going to be upgraded to make it safer for people to use.

Councillor for Kingsholm and Wotton Jeremy Hilton has sent plans to highway engineers to narrow the road at the crossing from 9.1m to 7.1m, in an effort the slow traffic down and makes pedestrians more visible.

The work to improve the crossing will take place from January 26 until February 6, along with the resurfacing of Kingsholm Road from February 11 until February 20.

Mr Hilton, who is the Liberal Democrat prospective parliamentary candidate for Gloucester, said : "Motorists approaching the crossing often don't stop for pedestrians waiting to cross. I have met with highway engineers to talk through improvements. I now have been sent the drawing, which I have approved. It is nearly 30 years since the zebra crossing was installed.

Ward colleague Sebastian Field (LD, Kingsholm and Wotton) added: "This is a busy crossing and the re-engineering of the layout will make it safer for everyone."

Kingsholm residents welcomed the plans. Gary Teague, landlord of Teague's Bar at The White Hart which is close to the crossing, said: "It's a good idea because alot of people drive quickly on the road. Some people have had to step back onto the pavement because the cars were going so fast."

Kingsholm resident David Bush added: "Vehicles do move speedily along there so this would definitely assist. It's a good idea so long as cyclists are looked after, because I wouldn't want them to have to move to the middle of the road."

Sally Godwin, local highway manager at Gloucestershire County Council, said: "Councillor Hilton asked us to look at the crossing when he received concerns about its visibility from people who use it regularly.

"As Kingsholm Road is about to be resurfaced it's an ideal opportunity to improve the crossing at the same time. "
