Severn crossing price hikes make it 'one of the most expensive roads in the world'

The Severn crossings are some of the most expensive stretches of road in the world, say campaigners.

New Year's Day will see the price of crossing hiked up to £6.50 for cars, working out at around £4 per kilometre travelled.

Prices will rise to £13.10 for small goods vehicles and small buses, and £19.60 for heavy goods vehicles and buses.

The Campaign Against Severn Tolls has said the increase makes the toll one of the most expensive per kilometre and is holding back the local economy.

Many in the Forest of Dean tackle the crossings daily and have previously hit out at the cost.

A spokesperson for the Department of Transport said: "Tolls for the Severn Bridge rise in line with inflation every year and are strictly regulated by the Severn Bridges Act 1992."

PlayStation and Xbox still struggling to restore networks after cyber-attack

Sony PlayStation and Microsoft Xbox networks are experiencing issues for a third day after a Christmas cyber attack.

Sony is working away to restore its online PlayStation services and has urged its users to be patient.

Microsoft's Xbox services have been back online since Boxing Day but lots of users are still experiencing issues signing in.

Online hackers, Lizard Squad, have claimed responsibility for the cyber-attack.

A 22-year-old, who calls himself Member Two, claimed to be a representative of the group and spoke to the BBC about the attack.

He said one of the motives was to expose the weaknesses in the security systems of the gaming giants, but also said the group hacked the sites "because we can".

"We are also doing it to amuse ourselves," he said.

"It's just such a huge company Microsoft... Do you not think they should be able to prevent such an attack?" he told BBC Radio Five Live.

"Is Christmas really about children playing with their new consoles, or playing with their new toys, or is it about them spending time with their families and celebrating Christmas? I think everyone's just taking it all out of the ordinary."

Neither Sony, nor Microsoft, have confirmed what disrupted their networks.

Gloucestershire Police are appealing for witnesses after a Winchcombe petrol station reported a suspected 'ram raid' and a police car was crashed into in Cheltenham last night.

Police were called to C&A Petrol Station in Broadway Street in Winchcombe at approximately 9.20pm yesterday.

Officers said a vehicle had been used to cause significant damage to the front of the petrol station and a large number of cigarettes had been taken from inside.

A vehicle was later discovered in Cheltenham, at approximately 9.50pm where it crashed into police car in Wellington Street, before colliding with a wall of a premise on The Park.

Matt Clarke, 23 from Winchcombe, was on his way to the pub with friends when he walked past the damaged police car.

He said: "It was around 10pm when we walked past that way. There were four or five police cars prowling round with their lights on and one had clearly been badly damaged. The police were turning some cars away but there was very little traffic or people around as it was Boxing Day.

"The damaged police car appeared to have been hit sideways. One of the back wheels looked really messed up. I don't think it would be a write-off though. Thankfully it didn't look like it was the kind of collision where anyone would get hurt."

Police said two suspects have been arrested and are currently at Cheltenham Police station.

They also said the driver of the damaged police car will be fine.

The vehicle is a silver Land Rover Discovery. Police suspect the car had been stolen from Vittoria Walk in Cheltenham on December 20.

Police are also linking this incident to another where a car crashed into a premises in the High Street, Chipping Campden at approximately 8.40pm yesterday.

Officers are appealing for witnesses and would like to speak to anyone who may have seen this vehicle or has any further information. Please call them on 101 quoting incident number 303 of the December 26, 2014.

A heartfelt appeal has gone out for help in tracking down a much-loved family pet. Tallulah Frost's terrier Molly has been missing since Tuesday. She's a black-grey terrier with a white breast plate and is four years old. "She went missing when we were walking in Horsley Woods at about 9am on Tuesday," said Tallulah. "She's microchipped and was wearing a collar when she went missing although this could have come off by now. "Although she went missing in Horsley she could have run quite far by now. "We're really missing her and want her back safe and sound. We got her two years ago from a rescue home in Wales and she's really part of the family. It would been the world to get her home. "She's a tough little dog so we're still hopeful that we'll find her." Tallulah and her family have put up posters, handed out leaflets and been searching for her. "We want people to keep an eye out for her and get in touch with any news at all," she said, adding that there is a reward on offer. "We also want to say a massive thank you to everyone who has helped us so far." Anyone with information on Molly should call 07973 322373.

Snow is falling on high ground in Gloucestershire despite most forecasts predicting that the county would dodge the white stuff. Falls have been reported in Forest Green in Nailsworth, Sheepscombe near Stroud, and on the other side of the county in Cinderford this afternoon. Currently most areas have been experiencing rain or sleet but some higher areas on the Cotswold Escarpment and the Forest of Dean have seen a covering. At this stage, it is not believed that roads in those areas are impassable, as the snow is melting on road surfaces. Snowfalls have hit the midlands and north of England over the past 24 hours, but stopped short, so far of Gloucestershire. Snow has not been forecast for the county but it is subject to a yellow, ice warning from the Met' Office. Widespread icy patches are expected to readily form on untreated surfaces this evening and during Saturday night, especially where snow cover exists or where wintry showers occur. The public should take extra care and be aware of the possibility of some disruption to travel.

MANCHESTER  United have high hopes of signing both Gareth Bale and Broussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels in the summer.

Real Madrid could be willing to let Bale go if they are able to sign Marco Reus from Dortmund, while Hummels is thought to favour a move to Manchester United with several other clubs after his signature.

Liverpool could land Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema for £50m in the January transfer window.

Manager Brendan Rodgers hopes the France international will be able to fill the void left by Luis Suarez's summer departure to Barcelona and Daniel Sturridge's ongoing injury.

However, he is also considering going for Seydou Doumbia from CSKA Moscow as a cheaper alternative at £20m.

Liverpool are also set to rival Tottenham for Paris St Germain midfielder Adrien Rabot, who has fallen down the pecking order at the French champions and could be allowed to leave on loan in January.

Top technology predictions for 2015 including the smart bra

If some time in the near future you notice someone wearing a peculiar watch, geeky glasses or talking to their jacket, take a closer look.

There's a good chance it's a piece of wearable technology.

Gadgets that track your health and fitness, monitor your productivity, take photos and videos may soon be as common as the pair of trainers.

Because next year is expected to see wearable tech really take off.

According to The Telegraph, by 2015, there are likely to be three key wearable trends: the huge growth of smartwatches, the arrival of technology integrated into clothing and the acceleration of the use of wearables in business.

    Smartwatches

The first generation of watches connect via a Bluetooth link to a smartphone and enable the owner to monitor their fitness levels and control their mobile's camera and music player as well as peek at maps and keep an eye on messages on the watch's tiny screen.

    Smart clothing

The first smart clothes evolved through medically based projects that featured sensors integrated into shirts and hats to monitor conditions such as epilepsy. Now, clothing brands are waking up to their potential. Next year could see smart bras (to monitor health and fitness), intelligent jackets and more, all of them with built-in electrodes that can pass on data to a smartphone or other device.

    Workplace wearables

Next year we will start to see wearables creeping into the workplace with smartwatches replacing mobile phones in industries such as construction, and healthcare professionals using virtual-reality headsets to undertake simulations of medical procedures.

The PlayStation Network is still down for a number of users three days after hackers followed through on threats to hack the gaming network Christmas Day.

The group, calling itself Lizard Squad, took out Microsoft's Xbox Live service in addition to Sony's PSN.

The hackers are believed to have used a denial of service attack, where they bombard the targets servers with internet traffic forcing it to shut down and preventing legitimate access.

Lizard Squad, which claims an affiliation with shadowy anarchist group Anonymous, has also said it has leaked the details of more than 13,000 users of Playstation, Xbox and online stores including Amazon.

The hackers posted a document online containing username and password combinations. They also added credit card numbers as well as expiry dates.

The group told their followers that they hacked the account details 'for the Lulz'.

Premier League round-up: Manchester City let two-goal lead slip against Burnley

MANCHESTER City missed a big opportunity to close the gap on Premier League leaders Chelsea as they squandered a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 at home to Burnley.

City looked on course to move to within one point of Chelsea when first half goals from David Silva and Fernandinho but George Boyd scored two minutes after the break and Ashley Barnes netted the equaliser with nine minutes left.

The door was opened for City after Chelsea could only draw 1-1 at fourth-placed Southampton in a game that kicked off almost an hour earlier.

Meanwhile, Arsenal moved above West Ham into fifth place with a 2-1 win at Upton Park.

At the other end of the table, bottom side Leicester City celebrated their first win in 14 league matches by beating fellow strugglers Hull City 1-0 at the KC Stadium, while managerless Crystal Palace and QPR, and Aston Villa and Sunderland played out goalless draws.

Stoke City heaped the pressure on West Brom boss Alan Irvine with a 2-0 win in the Midlands deby at the Britannia Stadium.

Humphreys admits the pressure is building following another Gloucester loss at Kingsholm

David Humphreys admits short-term gains are beginning to outweigh the long-term vision at Gloucester following yet another home defeat.

Humphreys' major goal when he took to the helm in the summer was to restore Kingsholm as a major fortress.

But the Cherry and Whites were stung by Wasps, who scored 24 first-half points to inflict a fourth Premiership defeat in the last five at a crumbling Castle Grim this season.

Gloucester will go into the New Year firmly rooted to ninth in the table, the same position as they finished last season and Humphreys admits the pressure is building.

He said: "We're disappointed to lose again at Kingsholm. At the start of the year we set out to make it a difficult place to play and with the results in the last couple of games we've not backed that up.

"After another home defeat the long term plan doesn't seem as important as short term results. We all know we're in the results business and we want to win.

"We also know we have some very good players, there are certain aspects improving and others that need to be better if we want to compete against the best teams.

"But we're fully aware we're four months into a long-term project and we've got to see an improvement on a regular basis.

"In the last two weeks, with two full houses it has been a fantastic place to play and the response of the crowd has been outstanding.

"When you meet supporters everybody understands we're not where we want to be and it is a work in progress but we do know we have to perform better than in the last couple of weeks."

Humphreys had called for a reaction to the record home defeat to Bath last week and was disappointed with the first half showing.

Gloucester were left shell-shocked after conceding two tries in ten minutes andtrailed by 24-14 at the break.

Despite battling back, to within a point at one stage, they paid the price for their lapses in concentration and must now travel to face Exeter Chiefs on Saturday.

The Devon outfit claimed a 25-22 victory in September, which began the rot at Kingsholm but Humphreys is confident that if his side continue to give their all that results will come.

Humphreys said: "We talked all week about a reaction to the Bath came and in the first half we were a little bit flat, we lacked that edge and it took some pretty strong words at half time to get that reaction.

"In the second-half certain parts were very good, we managed to get ourselves into the game but in a couple of key opportunities we lacked a bit of composure on the ball, a couple of poor decisions and Wasps hung on.

"Coming into this run of four games with Bath, Wasps, Exeter and Saracens, we knew it was a huge challenge and would really test us as a team and where we are.

"Two gone, we're definitely not where we want to be so going down to Exeter will be another big test

"But if we show the commitment, hard work and energy that we saw in the second-half against Wasps and a good deal against Bath, with the players and squad that we have, at some point results will turn around."

Humphreys admits the pressure is building following another Gloucester loss at Kingsholm

Gloucester drug addict wants to turn his life around in the new year

Last Christmas, Che Yarnold had everything he wanted – 10 months free from drinks and alcohol, and time with his family.

Twelve months on, the Gloucester man has taken a turn for the worse. After an attack in Gloucester city centre caused him to lose half a ear, he relapsed into drugs use, having been given medication to treat the pain.

Che, now 40, was serving up Christmas dinner last year as a volunteer at Gear Project, after having been an addict for the last 19 years. Having enrolled himself into one of Gear's two dry houses, he was determined to get clean, and he did.

He spent 26 weeks in rehabilitation, fighting the addiction. And he was given the perfect New Year's present, spending time with his family, who he hadn't seen in years. He was also preparing to start at Gloucestershire College, training to be an outreach worker.

But this year is different. He has gone back to sleeping rough, after he was asked to leave his temporary accommodation in Cheltenham.

He no longer contacts his family, saying he does not want to make them suffer.

"Last year was the best time of my life so far," he said.

"This year, it's a new addiction. It was not like the one before. You know, stopping is the easy part. It's staying away that is really difficult.

"Last Christmas was the happiest I had been for 27 years, and I really miss that now.

"My family had put up with me and gone through the experience, but now, I feel like I have let them down. I feel I have let myself down."

Che in happier times last year

He is determined to turn it around again, having done it before. Che is hoping to enrol in Livingstone House in Birmingham, a drug rehabilitation centre which he attended at the start of 2013.

"I cannot just be another statistic. I have to try and make it work," he said.

"It is going to be tough. The attack in April really did it for me. I'm not trying to justify it, because I self-destructed.

"After I lost my place in Cheltenham, I stuck my head in the sand and kept away from everything. Things just got worse from there.

"It's my resolution for next year. I want to get and stay clean."

He still gets panic attacks whenever he sees people approaching him now, but hopes it will go away in time for him to start rehabilitation.

"Living in the streets for as long as I had, using drugs, I didn't care and I just lost my pride and self- respect," he said.

"I just couldn't recognise myself anymore."

And he is worried about the closure of Gear in the new year, with daycare services coming to an end on January 3 as a result of funding cuts.

"It is going to cause chaos, so many people here rely on it," he said.

"They don't just support the homeless, they also help people who are on drugs, who have alcohol problems and all that.

"I can't imagine what it will be like without them."

He now needs £750 to start his rehab programme with Livingstone House. For more information on Livingstone House and how you can help the programme, contact them on 0121 753 4448.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Meeting Che:

When I met Che in 2012, he was lost, unclean and very low in spirit. Staying at Gear's night shelter, he wouldn't accept that he needed to change.

But Christmas last year was different. He was full of vigour, clean shaven, and his eyes were clear. Ten months free from drugs and alcohol, he looked ready to start a new life in college and with his family.

And while he volunteered at Gear, I had the privilege to write his heartwarming story.

Sadly, to see where he was this year broke my heart. Che was always well-spoken and friendly. Although some might scoff at drug addiction, it takes courage and much honesty to admit to his troubles.

His battle with drug addiction is even more poignant considering the closure of Gear Project. I wish him the very best for the future, and hopes he can start his life anew.
