The six city and district councils in Gloucestershire – Gloucester, Cheltenham, Tewkesbury, Forest of Dean, Stroud and the Cotswolds – have released details of rubbish collections over the Christmas and new year period.
ThisIsGloucestershire gives you the definitive reference point for when the bin men will be visiting your home over the festive season.
You will also find here details of how to get rid of your Christmas tree, depending on where you live.
Gloucester
There will be no refuse or recycling collections on Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year's Day in Gloucester – but staff will be working at weekends to get back on schedule. Find details of how your regular collection will be affected here.
Councillor Kathy Williams, cabinet member for the environment, said the council is trying to "keep service disruption to a minimum... while providing for (collection firm) Enterprise staff... to have time off for the holidays with their families." She also urged families to recycle "as much as they possibly can".
For Christmas trees, residents have a few options:
• Residents on the garden waste scheme can chop the tree up and place the parts in their green bin for collection
• If not on the scheme, the council is offering a free "bulky collection" service for the tree only. Call 01452 396396 to book a collection. Normal charges apply for other bulky items.
• Trees can also be taken to the landfill site at Hempsted for recycling.
Cheltenham
The borough council's waste service provider Ubico is urging residents to recycle as much waste as possible this year. Christmas cards can be put into the kerbside recycling boxes, recycled at the cardboard banks at bring sites around the town or at the Swindon Road recycling centre. But the council has emphasised wrapping paper is non-recyclable.

All residents can have their Christmas trees collected for composting this year. Trees should be put out at the kerbside on the same day as their refuse is due for collection in the two weeks between 7 and 18 January. Christmas trees up to five feet or one and a half metres tall can be left out whole. Trees larger than this need to be cut down before being put out for collection. The council also accepts Christmas trees at its Swindon Road recycling centre at any time.
Tewkesbury
Full details of when refuse and recycling collections are taking place in the Tewkesbury area over Christmas and New Year can be found at this link. If you are unsure, the council is also running an online facility where you can enter your postcode and find out when the bin men will be visiting.
Christmas trees will be collected if residents are signed up to the council's garden waste service. If the tree is taller than 6ft it must be cut into two pieces.
Christmas trees can also be recycled at participating garden centres or at the GL3 Community Hub in Churchdown from Friday 4th to Sunday 20th January.
Forest of Dean
The rural nature of the Forest of Dean area complicates matters for waste collections somewhat but there is information available on the council's website, here. Essentially there are different arrangements depending on which day your rubbish is usually collected and what zone of the area you live in. The council's website has a postcode system set up for people to find out what their arrangements are.
If you would like your Christmas trees recycled then it should be left at the kerbside on your scheduled garden waste collection day between Monday 7th and Friday 18th January. The council is asking residents to reduce larger trees to sections no longer than 1.5 metres. This service is available to all households.
Stroud
Waste collections have been adapted to cater for the Christmas period but only those who would normally expect collections on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, December 27th, December 28th and New Year's Day will be affected. Full details can be found here. Waste should be left outside homes no later than 6am of the revised collection date.
If snow affects collections, residents are asked to leave waste outside for two consecutive days – if it can't be collected on those days then the collection will have to wait until the following scheduled visit.
The council will set up Christmas tree banks – large skips – from Wednesday January 2nd to Sunday January 13th at the following locations so that trees can be shredded and composted locally:
• Berkeley (Library car park)
• Bussage (Village hall)
• Cainscross (Council car park)
• Cam (Tesco car park)
• Dursley (Dursley Pool car park)
• Haresfield (Blooms Garden Centre)
• Leonard Stanley (Pavillion car park)
• Minchinhampton (School Road)
• Nailsworth (Wyevale Garden Centre)
• Rodborough (B&Q)
• Slimbridge (Royal British Legion car park)
• Whitminster (Highfield Garden World)
• Wotton-under-Edge (Chipping car park)
• Upton-St- Leonards (Perry Orchard)
Cotswolds
Cotswold District Council's waste and recycling collection service provider, Ubico Ltd, will not be making refuse collections on the Christmas period Bank Holidays - Tuesday 25th, Wednesday 26th December and also Tuesday 1st January.
However, the crews will be working on Saturday 29th December and Saturday 5th and 12th January to catch up, with everything back to normal by the week beginning Monday 14th January. The revised collection schedule can be found here. For further information contact the council's waste hotline on 01285 623 123.
As in previous years, Cotswold District Council has arranged for real Christmas trees to be shredded and composted at Batsford Garden Centre in Moreton-in-Marsh and Dobbies Garden Centre in Cirencester. Residents will be able to take their used trees to these centres from 31st December to 13th January 2013.
Scott Williams, CDC's waste manager, said: "We are very grateful to residents who turn up at the two centres with their used Christmas trees. Once the trees are shredded, the wood chippings are taken to be composted and are put to very good use as a soil conditioner."
