Vital survey work is being done on three landmark bridges over the River Wye.
The Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is undertaking the on Redbrook Bridge, Lydbrook Bridge and the Wirework Bridge, at Tintern. Officers said they are "causing concern" and the results will show what condition they are in and how to ensure their continuing use.
The studies will look in-depth at the three former railway bridges, which currently provide pedestrian access.
Wye Valley AONB development officer Andrew Nixon, who is co-ordinating the survey work, said: "When the railways were in operation there were 10 rail bridges crossing the River Wye between Hereford and Chepstow, now only four remain, three of which are in the Wye Valley AONB.
"They are significant landmarks, heritage monuments and vital crossing points that link together communities, counties and countries. These studies will tell us what conservation work they require to maintain them in the long term and how access can be improved."
