PLAYERS pooled their effort to raise £1,770 for charity.

The team of eight played pool non-stop for 24 hours at their local pub to aid both the Five Valley Sounds and Cancer Research good causes.

The marathon at the King's Head, in Kingscourt, collected far more than joint organiser Randall Lancaster had expected.

"We thought we might raise about £700 but our team worked so hard getting sponsorship and people were so generous donating raffle prizes and buying tickets on the night, that we more than doubled our expectation," Mr Lancaster said.

"We were dog-tired at the end but it was worth it."

A £1,000 cheque had already gone to Cancer Research before Five Valley Sounds' fundraising officer Jan Blythe presented the Pool-a-thon team with a certificate thanking

them for the £770 they raised.

Her talking newspaper produces a free weekly service of local news and events on CDs for blind and partially-sighted people in the Stroud area.
