SECURITY at vicarages in Gloucestershire could be reviewed following the murder of Rev John Suddards at his home in Thornbury.

The Bishop of Gloucester, The Right Reverend Michael Perham, has called for a review into security at vicarages in the diocese.

He said: "There is something about the role of a priest that is about vulnerability, and although you take all the right precautions we're never going to create a world in which everybody is absolutely safe all the time.

"There may be some things we can do specifically about particular vicarages and rectories.

"Certainly if any of the clergy ask for some greater security because they can see what will make their life safer, we would as a diocese respond to that."

Yesterday Stephen Farrow, 48, was convicted of the brutal murder of Rev Suddards, who was 59, in February this year.

He was also found guilty of murdering 77-year-old Betty Yates at her home in Worcestershire in January this year.

Homeless vagrant Farrow - a diagnosed psychopath - was sentenced to two whole life sentences at Bristol Crown Court.

The court heard Farrow had an obsession with religion – claiming he had been sexually abused at boarding school by a priest – and wanted to murder the Archbishop of Canterbury.

The murder of Mr Suddards at his vicarage in Thornbury, South Gloucestershire, was the culmination of a two-month reign of terror in which Farrow killed Mrs Yates and threatened to kill "Christian scum".
