RESIDENTS will be canvassed this summer for their views on the future of the former Ship Inn site in Stonehouse.

A survey will go out to people who live near the waste ground between the Stroudwater Navigation canal and the A419.

Stonehouse Community Partnership is leading the initiative. Its chairman John Jeynes said survey would gain evidence for negotiations about the use of the site.

The Ship Inn stood beside the main road, diagonally opposite the bottom of Regent Street, until its demolition for a road widening in the late 1990s.

The land is in the hands of Gloucestershire County Council, which will soon transfer ownership to Stroud District Council.

It is in an idea spot where boats could moor and allow visitors to stroll into Stonehouse town centre. It could also provide a slipway into the canal.

"The partnership canal group is particularly keen to ensure the site, which is the natural gateway into Stonehouse from the canal, remains in public ownership," Mr Jeynes said. The Cotswold Way and a national cycle route both cross at the site.

A district council spokesman said: "The intention has always been to redevelop it for a use which is consistent with the desires of Stonehouse Town Council and to use the income from it to support the canal regeneration project."
