Legendary weatherman Michael Fish may be known for missing a massive hurricane in 1987 - but he is hoping to be spot on with his predictions for the RAF Fairford Royal International Air Tattoo.
With a light-hearted nod to his infamous 'hurricane' gaffe in '87 when he failed to predict a devastating hurricane over south east England, Mr Fish said: "There will be Typhoons and Tornados on the horizon at the Air Tattoo – but fortunately only in the form of iconic aircraft. There will be ideal weather too . . . you'll need your sun hats and sunscreen."
He added: "And I can confidently predict there will be no Hurricane . . well, we'll see!"
There will be a Hurricane at the Air Tattoo on July 20-21, part of the RAF's Battle of Britain Memorial Flight which will perform a special flypast with an RAF Tornado from 617 Sqn to mark the 70th anniversary of the Dambusters Raid.
On October 15 1987, he said during his forecast: "Earlier on today, apparently a woman rang the BBC and said she heard a hurricane was on the way . . . well, if you're watching, don't worry there isn't. That evening, the worst storm to hit south east England since 1703 cause record damage."
An Air Tattoo spokesman said Michael will be attending the airshow next weekend and generously offered to produce a bespoke forecast for the event.
He said: "For many people, Michael Fish is the quintessential BBC weather forecaster and we're delighted that he has predicted such fine weather for Fairford next weekend. We would like to reinforce Michael's message that people should prepare to bring sunscreen, sun hats and water."
