POLICE have arrested a man after he threatened passers by with a kitchen knife in Gloucester Park.

It happened at about 6pm on Tuesday when a member of the public reported a drunk man wielding a knife in the area.

It was reported that the man, aged 45, from Gloucester, was threatening those walking through the area.

The offender was arrested on suspicion of affray and possession of a bladed article.

He has been bailed to return to Gloucester Police Station on August 21.

Back in June a 19-year-old woman was allegedly hit over the head, dragged to the ground and hit, before her attacker is said to have attempted to sexually assault her.

This prompted calls to close the park off at night to make it safer.

County councillor Pam Tracey (C, Hempsted and Westgate) said: "Enough is enough, this has to stop. When you hear about things like this happening it makes you think society has broken down.

"I can't see why they don't just lock the gates at night to make it safer.

"It doesn't make it impossible to get into the park but it acts as a deterrent.

"We need to get more lights in there too, lets completely flood the park with light, and lets cut the trees back too so there is nowhere to hide.

"I would also like to see cameras in there, lots of cameras.

"I'm not knocking the park, it's a fantastic community space, one that we should make more of, but there is lots that we can do to make it safer for people to use."

Last year Layla Warburton was jailed after attacking two girls in the park, slashing one with a broken bottle.

She had walked up to the girls as they sat on the bandstand in Gloucester Park on March 12 before attacking them with the bottle.

She was later jailed for four years.

And in December last year a 24 year-old man was stabbed in the park by a 20 year-old.

Speaking about the most recent incident, a spokesman for Gloucestershire Constabulary said: "We were called to reports of an intoxicated man wandering around and threatening several people with a kitchen knife.

"The caller watched the man from a distance before police arrived.

"He had calmed down by that stage and shortly after officers made the arrest."

Hopes are high that the new cafe, to open imminently in the park, will help curb crime there. See page four for the story.
