PUB landlord Stephen Wood has told how he fought off a pit bull terrier which was set on him by a customer.

The 56-year-old hit out to stop the dog biting his arm and foot after owner Luke Jones called his animal to him and shouted: "'Ave him!"

Mr Wood had asked Jones, 36, to leave the Station Hotel, in Bruton Way, after he fell asleep.

He said: "He had fallen asleep on a sofa and the dog was on the floor by him.

"I asked him to leave and told him dogs aren't allowed in the pub."

Jones, of no fixed address, walked out but then returned, asking: "Who nicked my bike?"

Mr Wood said Jones lunged at a customer, so he made a grab for him.

"He whistled for his dog and said 'ave him'. The dog bit my arm and foot.

"He then went outside and smashed a metal chair across the back of a customer and then the customer was bitten by the dog on the palm of his hand."

Mr Wood still has a scar from the attack and said: "It was painful because the dog sank his teeth into my arm and I had to punch it to try to get him off.

"I don't blame the dog, I blame the bloke.

"My 10-year-old son was upstairs and could have easily been there at the time. He could have been caught in the crossfire and his injuries would have been considerably worse as he is a lot smaller."

Mr Wood, who came to Gloucester from Eastbourne last year to take over the hotel, said: "I never expected anything like this but it hasn't tarnished my opinion of Gloucester. I still love it."

Jones received a suspended jail sentence after admitting two charges of actual bodily harm in relation to the incident, which happened on November 3.

Prosecution barrister Mark Hollier told Gloucester Crown Court: "There was a lot of blood but fortunately both men only suffered superficial wounds.

"The defendant has an unenviable criminal record with previous convictions for assaulting police, criminal damage and violence."

In mitigation, Tim Burrows said: "My client has had problems in his life, not helped by alcohol, but he is already on a community order and it must be said he is co-operating well with the probation service."

Judge William Hart told Jones: "This was a nasty incident and the two men attacked by your dog deserve sympathy."

Jones was given a 12-month sentence, suspended until November 2014, when his community order is due to end.
