FREE Father's Day family fun in Stratford Park shared its space with crafty knitters.

The annual activities around the Stroud bandstand, organised by community groups including Ignition, was accidentally double booked with Prema arts centre's first needlecraft picnic Knitpic.

"In the end we worked together and it wasn't too much of a problem," said Phil Coysh from Christian-based Ignition. "We had 800 to 1,000 people despite the dreadful weather."

Almost continuous rain failed to dampen visitors' spirits although Mr Coysh said: "We were amazed how many people came and threw themselves into all the activities."

Highlights included bouncy boxing, human table football and a wide range of arts and crafts.

Ignition, Psalms and Churches Together in Stroud, supported by a host of Christian churches and groups, offered the events.

"Our aim was simply to bring the Christian community in Stroud together to put on a great event for local families," Mr Coysh said.

"The sun came out just as the band played Jesus Christ Superstar."
