Feared striker Jamie Cureton has signed a one-year contract with Cheltenham Town. The second highest goalscorer still active in the English game, behind Crystal Palace's Kevin Phillips, the 37-year-old left Exeter City at the end of last season and he has become Mark Yates' first new recruit of the summer. Cureton has netted nearly 250 goals during a 20-year career which has seen him play at every level from the Premier League to League Two. After meeting with Yates in May, Cureton consulted Barry Hayles about his experience of Cheltenham and his former Bristol Rovers team mate gave the Robins a glowing reference. "I had a good chat with Barry, who enjoyed his time here and he's a close friend of mine so I trust what he says," Cureton said. "I also spoke to Steve Elliott and he had an inkling I was signing, so he encouraged me to get it all done and said how much he's enjoyed it here. "I was impressed with Cheltenham last season and they were unfortunate to miss out on going up again, so hopefully this year we can go a step further and get out of this division." Bristol-based Cureton admitted geography played a part in his decision to join Cheltenham, but he said there was far more to it than convenience. "It wasn't just about being local and there was a lot more to it," he said. "If I didn't feel it was right I'd have moved away again, but thankfully it's worked out well being close to Bristol and the club being right, it's very fortunate." The many clubs of Cureton: Norwich City (two spells), Bristol Rovers, Reading, Pusan Icons, QPR, Swindon Town, Colchester United, Shrewsbury Town, Barnsley, Exeter City (two spells), Leyton Orient.
