Fears for 82 jobs at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College

FURTHER job losses may well be on the cards at a college's campus in Stroud as it struggles with government funding cuts. Last month the merged SGSC - South Gloucestershire and Stroud College - confirmed it was in job loss talks with five staff at Stroud and a further eight in Bristol. Now the SGSC has said it has officially notified its trade unions that a further 82 staff might also be affected by redundancy. SGSC operates across three main sites. Stroud, Filton, and Stoke Gifford and it is expected the redundancies might be delivered proportionately. College principal Kevin Hamblin said however that it was too early to be site specific. He also hoped some staff would be redeployed. "We are in the process of speaking with staff which will take perhaps another seven to 10 days," Mr Hamblin said. The reason for the proposed redundancies were future reductions in funding. Support was being cut in 2013-14 and 2014-15 across the sector and is impacting on all colleges to various degrees. For SGSC it means a loss of about £4 million for the two years. "Public spending is being reduced in almost all govenrment departments," Mr Hamblin said. "The further education sector is not immune to these cuts and every college will need to respond to the reduction in funding, whilst continuing to improve the quality of what we do." Mr Hamblin said: "At a time when we are seeing record recruitment at 16-18 and our success rates are the best in the area, we need to cut our costs in proportion to the funding we receive." SGSC was formed in February 2012 from the merger of Filton College and Stroud College. It now has altogether around 960 staff and 9,000 students.
