Anti-terror march may be cancelled after organiser double books herself

AN ANTI-TERROR march is in danger of collapsing after its organiser realised she was taking part in a race on the same day.

The Gloucester Strong march is planned to take to the streets of the city on Sunday June 23, as part of a national movement reacting to the Woolwich terror attack.

But the group has admitted publicly that its organiser had double booked – and realised that she is in fact running in the city's Race for Life cancer run on the same day.

Police won't let the march go ahead without a proper organiser and the group's supporters were yesterday scrabbling around on Facebook to find a replacement.

In a post they said: "Come on Gloucester!!! We need a volunteer for the march to go ahead??? The organiser wasn't able to commit as she has the race for life on the same day."

If the march does go ahead, there are new fears that it could be hijacked by protest group English Defence League, which is also in the early stages of planning a street protest.

Said Hansdot, the sheriff of Gloucester, said: "People have the right to protest and march and if the it is done properly I would attend it.

"But we have to be careful that we are not adding fuel to the fire. EDL say they may hijack it and we cannot have this going on."

A spokesman for the police said: "We have had contact with the previous organiser to allow to us facilitate the march.

"As we understand it at the moment, no new organiser has come forward."

Organisers at Cancer Research's Race for Life event are watching things carefully.

Event organiser Kelly Rumble said: "We are aware of the march but can't say anything more until we know the details of what is being planned."
