Time for action on bad drivers

AS the summer drink-drive campaign is launched, it is interesting that there seems to be far more debate about another motoring crackdown.

At last, something is going to be done about the middle-lane motorway hoggers.

The drink-driving campaign is as important as ever, with a clear message that morning-after drivers are being targeted this year.

But those motorway slow coaches, who until now have not even been recognised as committing an offence, will soon be facing on-the-spot fines and points on their licences.

For years they have not only frustrated other drivers, but forced them to make last-minute manoeuvres, even when they are sticking to speed limits themselves.

Why do they do it? It is almost certainly because they lack the confidence to drive on motorways in the first place.

The middle lane almost acts as a comfort blanket. They feel no need to change lanes even when the inside lane is completely empty because they are uncomfortable switching from one lane to another.

And if courses are to be offered to drivers who are prepared to be educated rather than have points put on their licence, there should be one major difference from the speeding classes.

The courses must be practical rather than classroom-based. Get the hoggers on a motorway – and teach them how to drive properly.

WHAT a great idea to come from the inspiring Cheltenham Animal Shelter.

We often feature the brilliant work they do trying to find unwanted pets a loving home.

Now they have come up with an idea that should appeal to a whole new range of potential owners.

Dogs will be offered for fostering so that they will be able to adapt to living in a house again.

But what this will also achieve is a way for a new owner to find out if they really are ready to take in a dog or other pet.

The shelter often highlights the difficulties owners have homing pets. Their idyllic view is often shattered when the reality of day-to-day care kicks in.

When both the animals and the humans are properly prepared, there could be a real chance of getting the soaring numbers under control.
