"Inadequate" Gloucester Academy on the up

JUST six months after being labelled "inadequate" and branded as having "serious weaknesses" Gloucester Academy is on the up.

On May 8 the Cotteswold Road school was visited by education watchdog Ofsted in what was the second monitoring inspection since the school's damning diagnosis in October 2012.

The latest progress report was full of praise for the school, which is preparing to move into its new £15million building in September.

Inspector Lorna Brackstone said: "Student progress has accelerated and standards are improving. Extra sessions and revision classes are supporting those students who have gaps in their learning to rectify previous inadequacies in teaching.

"Some groups of students who are at risk of not doing as well as their classmates, for example those who are disabled or have special educational needs, those eligible for free school meals and persistent absentees, have improved their attendance. This is because they are individually supported and links between home and the academy have been successfully forged.

"Having considered all the evidence I am of the opinion that at this time the school is making reasonable progress."

Some weaknesses remain in the school, which Ofsted have identified for staff to work on and improve.

Headteacher John Reilly said: "We are pleased that the improvement we have made has been recognised.

"It is a fair reflection of all the hard work that has been put in by staff and pupils. We also realise that there is much still to do to raise standards and we look forward to the summer exam results and moving to our new building."
