RANDWICK Wap revellers were undeterred by heavy rain when they massed in their hundreds to watch the ancient spectacle.

Queen for a day Rachael Rutter and other Wap personalities got to the end of their parade through the village before the heavens opened.

But the crowds stayed put and were well and truly drenched for their troubles.

Event chairman Simon Vincent said: "We just got back to the playing field before the deluge. We were pleased so many people came out and stayed out."

The Wap fair saw Rachael, 16, carried shoulder-high among the crowds before traditional cheeserollings officially opened the stalls and sideshows.

This year's Wap featured one of its youngest ever mayors – 21-year-old Michael Cratchley.

Wap characters in old fashioned costumes included Mop Man Maureen Keogh and Apprentice Mop Man Theseus Lithgoe.

Simon added: "I would like to thank everyone who helped us put on the Wap and stayed the course."
