SHOPPERS and cars will be recorded by council officials as part of a plan to put in a zebra crossing near Cheltenham's busiest supermarket.
The crossing would be placed in Hatherley Lane, near to the Asda supermarket.
A working group made up of parish, borough and county council representatives have come up with the idea.
Now a seven day video pedestrian survey will take place at the site to determine whether a crossing would be a wise investment.
Residents have called for traffic calming measures to be installed along the busy road in the past.
The video survey will take in both sides of the Asda roundabout to figure out the best location for the proposed crossing.
Stuart Fowler, chairman of Up Hatherley parish council, said there were major concerns about the number of vehicles using the road every day.
He added: "It is something that is on the list.
"What worries me more than anything on that road is the sheer volume of traffic caused by rat runners trying to avoid congestion in Lansdown and on the A40.
"The question is still open and the parish council will be guided by the result of the survey. We need to establish what the demand is before we put one in there because they are very expensive."
Councillor Roger Whyborn (LD, Up Hatherley) said the area in and around Hatherley Lane was beset by problems caused by the growing amount of traffic using the road.
He said: "There has been a lot of talk and demand in that area and some concern about if it is a waste of money.
"The full implications of that, I don't know.
"The situation in Hatherley Lane is that you have two or three things going on at once there.
"At the top of the road it is very heavily trafficked and there is nearly as much traffic there as somewhere like Leckhampton Road.
"Residents there are very concerned about the increasing levels of traffic. The problem further down the road is slightly different in that residents find it difficult to get out of their own side roads on to Hatherley Lane simply because it is busy and because of poor visibility.
"There is a common cause between the different areas at each end of the road and it is our plan to get representatives from the area together with the county council next month to talk about these issues and deal with them."
Gloucestershire Highways confirmed it will be looking at the feasibility of installing a zebra crossing at the site.
A spokesman for the authority said: "We are investigating the possibility of placing a zebra crossing at this location.
"We will be looking at where it could go and how well it could be used."
