AFTER a 173 year wait, Gloucester Railway Station has finally been given a timely lift, thanks to an investment of £2.9million.

Gloucester MP Richard Graham was on hand yesterday to officially open the new lift at the station which will now allow disabled and elderly people reach the far platforms without assistance from First Great Western staff.

Mr Graham said: "This is a fantastically exciting day.

"We have been waiting 173 years for this new lift to get over to the platforms.

"This is a new world for all station visitors in our city."

Students from the National Star College in Ullenwood were first to use the lift.
