To help keep the city clean and improve the health of residents Officers from Gloucester City Council will be urging those in and around the bus station to go smoke free on Friday 17th May.

The bus station itself is a smoke free area, but may users don't abide with the 'no smoking' rules and light up.

They also leave smoking related litter behind, which is unsightly and often difficult for those who clean the City streets to remove.

Those who fail to follow the rules will be reminded they can face a fine of £50 for lighting up in a no smoking area and a fine of up to £80 for dropping litter, including cigarette ends.

Colin Organ, Cabinet Member Housing, Health and Leisure said: "It's never too late to stop smoking as there are always health benefits to be gained and keeping the bus station free of smoking related litter and smoke makes it a more welcoming place for people to come into the City.

"During the event on Friday 17th from 10am- 1pm officers will be taking the opportunity to speak with users of the bus station to ensure they know that if they fail to follow the rules of keeping the bus station smoke free they could face a hefty fine."

The event will also coincide with the BiG City Clean Up, which encourages residents and businesses to clean up their patch before the Night Market, taking place form 5-8pm on Friday 17th May and the coveted Tall Ships Festival, which is set to bring thousands of visitors into the City from Friday the 24th May.
