Cheltenham sunseekers warned not to hit the booze too hard

SUN worshippers in Cheltenham might be forgiven for enjoying a tipple or two while soaking up a few rays.

But police have warned people not to overstep the mark by over-indulging on booze in the warm weather.

Although there was no evidence of a spike in alcohol-fuelled crime over the bank holiday weekend, it has been known to cause problems with fighting and antisocial behaviour in the past.

Inspector Joseph Tierney, of Gloucestershire police, urged people enjoying a drink in the warm weather to know their limits.

He said: "We would encourage people to enjoy themselves, but always to be aware of their limits.

"We advise them not to drink to excess to minimise the risk of aggressive behaviour and to their own personal safety."

In the past month, extra police resources have been deployed to deal with bank holiday binge drinkers in Cheltenham and it is thought a combination of sunshine and an extra day off work can lead to a rise in crimes.

The warning to watch the booze intake was echoed by street pastors, a group of volunteer church goers who patrol the town at night handing out water, flip-flops and a friendly ear to revellers who have had too much to drink.

Graham Ledger, a spokesman for the group, said: "We have been patrolling the town throughout the weekend and although there are plenty of people who have had a bit much, we haven't seen anything out of the ordinary for this time of year.

"If anything, we have seen a slight increase in the amount of water bottles we are handing out as people try to keep themselves hydrated.

"If we have got any advice it's to drink plenty of water and watch your limits.

"We will be operating throughout the summer and doing our bit to help people wherever we can."

Police have also said the arrival of the summery conditions could spell an increase in a completely different kind of crime – house burglaries.

Inspector Tierney said: "When the weather is warm, as it has been in the last few days, people tend to leave their windows open.

"It's important people keep their homes secure and do not go out while leaving their windows open, which can make it easier for burglars to target them."
