IT might not have been as hot as forecasters predicted, but thousands still flocked to the opening of Cheltenham's historic lido on Saturday.

Swimmers queued outside to get in the outdoor heated 50 metre pool for the first time this season – for the bargain price of just 2p.

By mid-morning, staff estimated that more than 1,000 people were attempting to bask in the little sun that was shining over the 1930's attraction next to Sandford Park.

Events manager Iain Barton said the opening and Turning Back Time day had proved popular with visitors.

Staff donned traditional uniforms and gave modern-day swimmers a taste of 1935.

Mr Barton said: "It was very busy compared to other opening days and the warm weather helped. We were quite pleased as we had all our regulars in as well as a lot of new faces.

"Every year the lido seems to get more popular. Despite last year's bad weather, we sold the second largest amounts of season tickets since 1996.

"People seem to love using the lido come rain or shine. We open every day, no matter what the weather and people are more than willing to get in for a swim.

"There is nothing else nearby that compares to the lido. It really is a town centre paradise and it is not just the pool, but the four acres of gardens around it."

Cheltenham Silver Band entertained crowds while children took part in a trial and treasure hunt for a sixpence. Demonstrations from Cheltenham Canoe Club, with a taster session, and an exhibition match featuring Cheltenham Swimming and Waterpolo Club also took place.

The Sandford Park Swimming Pool was opened on May 25, 1935 by the town's mayor E L Ward. It was the largest pool in the region at the time, measuring 165ft by 90ft and built at a cost of £16,000.

The heated Sandford Parks Lido was restored to its 1930's glory in a £700,000 project in 2007.

When it was threatened with closure in 1992, it was a 9,000-signature petition that changed borough councillors' minds.

It now attracts more than 170,000 visitors a year.
