AS broadband provision continues to improve in the Valleys and Vale – albeit there is still more to do – we can be optimistic about the contribution to our local economy this technology will continue to bring. One of my priorities remains the provision of accessible and speedy broadband. To this end I have had numerous meetings with providers, notably BT, ministers and local councils.

My aim is to ensure we have around 90% coverage of at least adequate broadband with the next two years. This represents a huge investment in infrastructure, measured in millions of pounds, and involves many contractors and agencies.

The emerging and developing broadband entrepreneurs are part of the service sector growth so central to the performance of our economy. Encouraging growth figures for the last quarter are, in part, due to this sector.

Technology is making a positive difference to the world of manufacturing and engineering. Broadband has revolutionised design technology, communications and marketing but new products, materials and processes are bringing about huge step changes in everything we make and do.

The Government's Industrial Strategy is geared to support this manufacturing revolution. In creating an aerospace centre in order to help underpin Britain's already impressive reputation in the sector – soon to be followed by something similar for the automotive sector – bodes well for the Valleys and Vale as we already have a strong reputation in these sectors to build on.
