Battle lines were drawn up as campaigners vowed to do their utmost to protect green fields on the outskirts of Cheltenham from beady-eyed developers.
More than 200 people turned up to a public meeting hosted by the Leckhampton Green Land Action Group (Leglag) to show their opposition to anticipated plans to build up to 1,275 homes on land between the A46 Shurdington Road and Church Road / Leckhampton Lane.
Packed into the main hall at Leckhampton Primary School, attendees heard a rallying cry as campaign leaders attempted to gather support against proposals for the land, which are expected to be tabled any day.
Preventing any large-scale development there, they said, would not only preserve the area for outdoor recreation but would provide a valuable green link between the town centre and the surrounding Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Gerry Potter, a committee member of Leglag, said: "We were pleased with how the meeting went and the turnout was excellent.
"I counted 240 people in total which is a really good effort.
"Now, more than ever, is the time for people to show their support against any large-scale development on this land because we are expecting planning applications to be lodged very soon."
