Runners in Cheltenham held a minute's silence this morning in memory of those killed in the Boston Marathon.

Participants in the Cheltenham Parkrun, a weekly 5km event in Pittville Park, observed the tribute – many with their heads bowed in thought.

Echo sports editor Phil Norris was among the competitors.

He tweeted afterwards: "Moving minute silence at Cheltenham parkrun as we honour those, killed, injured and affected by the Boston marathon bombs."

Three people died and more than 170 were injured in Monday's bombings, near the finish of the Boston race.

A suspect in the atrocity has been arrested by police after being found in hiding in a boat in Watertown.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, is now in custody. His brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, an alleged accomplice, died in a shootout with police yesterday.

Organisers of tomorrow's London Marathon have vowed not to let the bombing stop them from pressing ahead with the event.

Many runners from Cheltenham will be among those taking part in the annual 26-miler, which raises thousands of pounds for charity.

Bill Jones, 61, from Leckhampton, will be running in memory of his late mother, Lilian Stanley, who died last month aged 90 after suffering from dementia.

He told the Echo: "I am, like many other people, very saddened by the awful tragedy in Boston and my heart pours out to the people affected.

"The running community is global so, as a runner, I think the London Marathon will show the world some solidarity.

"I don't want to give in to any of these terrorist activities. I won't let them dictate my life."
