Leader of the Labour party Ed Miliband visited a rain soaked Stroud on Saturday.

Mr Miliband was welcomed by former Stroud MP David Drew, who celebrated his birthday on Saturday, labour councillors and around 200 members of the public.

After walking through the town in the pouring rain, gathering followers along the way, he stopped in the high street to deliver his key messages - but not before leading a sing along of happy birthday to Mr Drew.

"It is the first time I've done that," he said.

He added: "It is great to be here in Stroud with my good friend David Drew. I wanted to support our campaign in the Gloucestershire County Council elections.

"I have a clear message I want to give. There are lots of people saying this government has failed and they are right.

"Can we, the Labour party, turn the problems around? My answer is yes."

He joked with those who had congregated to listen to him, and fielded questions on the NHS, education and bedroom tax among other issues. All the while he pressed home his support for Mr Drew.

Mr Miliband was also keen to explain the main issues on his agenda, and the key factors he would address if made prime minister.

"There are a million young people not working. We need to get Britain's young people working again, that is the first thing I would do," he said.

"We have got to start building houses again in this country. We have a profound housing crisis.

"We have got to make a difference to people's standard of living. Lets have a mansion tax.

"I don't just offer a different style of management to David Cameron, I offer a different vision of this country. I think the way Britain succeeds is being a united country, not a divided country.

"That is my vision, and I urge you to go to the county council elections and vote Labour and then vote David Drew in in 2015."
