NHS support to create a new primary healthcare centre in Bishop's Cleeve is likely to mean the closure of a Prestbury doctor's surgery.

Community leaders have expressed their dismay at the long-in-coming plans which could mean the village will not have a GP.

Seven Posts Surgery in Prestbury Road has announced its intention to pursue a new facility at the heart of the new Cleevelands housing development, along with its partner surgery Greyholme, which is currently based in Church Road, Bishop's Cleeve.

But combining forces under one roof will mean the loss of the Seven Posts base in Prestbury.

And while there have been rumours that another surgery could move into the village, the prospect of being doctorless has been described as a "calamity" by community leaders.

The surgery's latest newsletter has let all patients know about the moving project, describing it as "exciting changes". Speaking in the newsletter, Debra Elliott, director of commissioning development at NHS Gloucestershire, said: "Following the decision to grant planning permission for the new Cleevelands housing development in Bishop's Cleeve, NHS Gloucestershire is supporting Seven Posts and Greyholme surgeries to progress plans to build a new primary care centre within the development.

"GPs will soon be in discussion with the landowners to agree final details of the land that will be provided for this."

The surgeries have described their current facilities as "cramped and outdated".

And according to a survey carried out by the surgery, seven out of 10 patients were in favour of the move.

Councillor Les Godwin (PAB, Prestbury) greeted the proposed move with dismay.

He said: "We are aiming to meet with the NHS and the surgery and the objective will be to be given a reassurance that whatever decision is made they will ensure that there would be a practice in Prestbury, should the doctors go."

He added: "It would be a calamity because a lot of people, not only those in Prestbury, use the practice.

"What is of great concern is that with 300 houses being built on Starvehall Farm, you are talking about 600 plus people needing medical treatment very soon and to think that there might not be any practice in Prestbury would be a calamity."

Seven Posts patients said elderly people who live in Prestbury will struggle to get to Bishop's Cleeve if they are forced to go there to see a doctor.
