Could these be the most ridiculous road markings in Cheltenham?
That's the question being asked by residents in Fairview after they spotted the bizarrely painted marks in Trinity School Lane.
The faded writing on the asphalt reads "School – Keep Clear", warning motorists not to block the entrance to Holy Trinity Primary School.
But after some underground work was undertaken by Virgin Media last month, the company only replaced the letters they dug up, leaving two half painted 'O's and a P standing out in stark contrast to the rest of the sign.
It attracted derisory remarks from people living in the area.
"It looks silly," said pensioner Peter Parker, 71, who lives nearby.
"They have obviously dug up the road to do some work and only bothered to replace he bits of paint they disturbed.
"It seems a bit lazy seeing as the rest of the markings have faded to the point where you can't read them.
"Why couldn't they just paint over the whole sign?
"The way it has been left looks ridiculous. It just means someone else will have to come out and paint over it."
The work was carried out by Virgin Media and completed on March 25.
Under contractual obligations the company only has to replace the bit they dug up.
Gloucestershire Highways bosses said the faded road sign underneath the new paint may meet its required standard but promised to investigate the matter.
Chris Riley, local highways manager, said: "By law the utility company only has to replace markings that it has obliterated because of its work.
"Now that this issue has been brought to our attention, we will assess the current markings on the road to ensure they meet the standards required of us and replace them if necessary."
