Cheltenham grandmother Lindsay Sandiford has lost her appeal against her death sentence in Bali for drug trafficking. A Bali High Court has upheld the sentence handed to the 56-year-old in January. Sandiford, who used to live in Hester's Way and Warden Hill, could now face a firing squad if other routes of appeal are rejected. She was arrested in May last year after smuggling 4.8kg (10.6lb) of cocaine into the Indonesian island from Bangkok, in Thailand. She claims she was forced to transport the drugs by a gang who threatened her children. Prosecutors on the island only called for Sandiford to be jailed for 15 years, but a judge sentenced her to death. Four others involved with the case received jail terms ranging from one to six years. Cheltenham MP Martin Horwood has been lobbying for intervention on her behalf, to stop a sentence he has described as "morally wrong". But appeal judges in Bali have ruled the original decision was "accurate and correct," according to a Bali High Court spokesman. Sandiford is expected to be informed of the decision as soon as possible. She now has 14 days to appeal to the Supreme Court starting from the day she is informed of the verdict. If the Supreme Court rejects her appeal, she can seek a judicial review or a reprieve from the president.
