Child porn images downloaded by a Gloucester man were only to be used to taunt paedophiles, a court heard.
Brian Goldingay received a suspended jail term and walked free from court after making the "incredible" claim.
The 37-year-old, of Askwith Road, Saintbridge, pleaded guilty to six charges of possessing more than 300 indecent images of children at Gloucester Crown Court.
But he told police he would show the indecent pictures to users of an online chat room before abusing them for being interested in such images.
He said he was disgusted by the pictures himself.
Judge William Hart gave Goldingay a 16-week jail term suspended for 15 months and ordered him to do 100 hours of unpaid work. He also imposed a sexual offences prevention order, disqualified him from working with children and ordered him to sign the sex offender register for the next seven years.
Prosecutor Lisa Hennessy said police seized Goldingay's Blackberry mobile phone last March.
"He said he had used his mother's laptop computer to view the images, then photographed the computer screen to get the images into his mobile phone," she said.
"In fact, no laptop computer was found with the images on it. The files recovered appeared to have been created using a Blackberry device – the same make as Mr Goldingay's mobile phone."
Sabia Pathan, defending, said it was an unusual case because Goldingay maintained he got no sexual gratification from child porn himself.
He had the images, she said, to "remonstrate" with chatroom users who wanted to see such pictures.
Judge Hart said a probation officer who wrote a pre-sentence report on Gouldingay was "incredulous" about his claim.
