TIGHTHEAD prop and scrum-half remain the priority areas as Nigel Davies aims to nail down Gloucester's squad for 2013/14.

The Cherry and Whites boss today confirmed nine new contracts for existing stars, that will form the backbone of next season's Kingsholm squad.

But rugby director Davies refused to rule out further deals for current players who are out of contract at the end of this term.

Confirmation of Nick Wood's three-year deal tops the billing on the completed deals, with wing Shane Monahan rejecting the overtures of London Irish and Connacht to sign a new two-year contract.

Props Dan Murphy and Yann Thomas have both signed two-year deals, with hooker Koree Britton and loose-forward Gareth Evans following suit.

Highly-prized scrum-half Dan Robson has also completed a two-year contract, while club stalwarts Andy Hazell and Will James have ratified one-year terms.

Tom Savage and Jonny May completed new deals comfortably before Christmas, and since then Davies has methodically worked through his squad.

Now he is happy to announce the spine of next term's set-up – but stressed this list is not exhaustive.

Player/backs coach Mike Tindall is expected to complete a new deal to continue his current role next term.

Dario Chistolini, Tommaso D'Apice, Drew Locke, Martyn Thomas and Brad Field are Gloucester's other remaining out-of-contract first team men.

Confident in Gloucester's existing talent, Davies said there was little room or need for improvement or change in the Kingsholm squad.

Davies admitted surprise at the levels of interest from agents and players keen on moves to Kingsholm – but said in most cases those services will not be required.

He explained: "It's very settled, and I'm really happy with the structure and balance of the squad.

"There's at least another year before we start needing to make too many changes.

"There might be one or two more re-signings to come still.

"We are still looking at our options.

"There's a lot of players and agents who have been in contact, wanting to come here.

"And sometimes deals can be struck when that's the case, and if there are opportunities that arise then we'll look at them.

"This doesn't mean there won't be other re-signings at all, it's just a reflection of where we are.

"It's not drawing a line under anything by any means."

Dave Lewis' decision to move to Exeter next term leaves a gap at scrum-half, while Davies is still reviewing the situation at tighthead prop too.

He continued: "Your recruitment plans can change in the space of a couple of weeks, even at this stage.

"Once you have what you feel is a settled squad, you then still keep revising it all the time, trying to strengthen wherever you can.

"So the whole thing changes due to a number of factors continually, and it's all about managing that process.

"There's always certain positions we'd like to strengthen in terms of the depth, and we may look to do that if there are ways around that.

"Ultimately we are governed by the salary cap of course.

"I felt this squad of players generally has at least another year before we start tinkering too much with it.

"So to have signed some of the names we have is quite substantial and there's a lot of young talent coming through.

"They will only mature and improve over the next few years.

"It says a lot for what we have here right now, and what Gloucester is all about, that people really want to stay here.

"And it's been interesting as well that there have been a lot of people getting in touch with us, wanting to come to Gloucester.

"We haven't got a huge amount of opportunity because the first priority was securing the players within the squad.

"But it's great that people want to play for Gloucester, that's very, very important.

"Having a clear identity as a rugby team can have a hugely beneficial part to play in the success of the team."
