A Full Eastgate Street closure during weekends is to be trialled as part of a Gloucester Nightsafe Initiative.
There are currently restrictions on the road on Friday and Saturday nights between Nettleton Road and Bruton Way.
From next Friday, April 5, the closure will extend to the junction with Clarence Street and there will be new hours of operation of 11pm to 5am.
The new restrictions will also include taxis, with a replacement taxi rank operating outside the front of the GL1 leisure centre.
The experiment will run for three consecutive weekends up to Saturday April 20 and is all thanks to Safer Gloucester and the Nightsafe group of partner agencies.
It is hoped the changes will improve safety top the area at night.
Additional temporary signs will be erected, warning drivers of the closure and police and highways officers will be present to observe the benefits that the street closure provides to pedestrians, as well as problems caused to drivers.
If successful, consideration will be given to making the arrangement permanent after a statutory consultation process during which representations either for or against the proposal can be made.
Chief Inspector for Gloucester Richard Burge said: "Taxi drivers and the pub and club owners we have spoken to are fully behind this trial, so we have good buy-in to the idea.
"We are determined to make a night out in Gloucester a safe and pleasant experience and while the current restrictions have really helped, we believe the amount of footfall on Eastgate Street on Friday and Saturday nights means that this extension is necessary.
"Pedestrians and vehicles don't mix well and with people spilling out onto the streets from pubs and clubs dangerous situations can arise.
"We have written to inform local residents and businesses of the move and will now monitor how it goes."
