Three swimmers from Gloucester City Swimming Club travelled to Leeds for the British Gas International Championships. A re-scheduled event, the competition took place at the John Charles Aquatic Centre. Sophie Hall, 14, was first up with her 800m freestyle swim – full of cold, Hall swam well in a time of nine minutes, 16.84 seconds, unfortunately not a personal best as she was seven seconds away from her previous best. Hall finished in tenth place. Ryan West, 15, swam just after lunch in the disability multi-class 100m freestyle. A month ago the club weren't even sure whether West would be able to compete at these championships, having dislocated his knee at Christmas he had been out the water for a month with his leg in a splint. Having decided to 'give it a go' West was keen to enter as this is the event he is hoping to qualify for at next year's Commonwealth Games. He did a great swim in a time of 1.03.23 and gained a PB time, finishing 13th overall. He's currently just over two seconds away from the qualifying time, with stage one of qualifying taking place in June at the Dutch Nationals. The next day saw Hall's favourite event, the 200m freestyle. This was a big race for Hall as she was hoping for a good time which hopefully would have meant a place at the Junior European Championships in Poland. With nerves getting the better of her, her race didn't quite go to plan and she finished in 11th place again just outside her PB. West swam again, competing in the 400m freestyle – this is his least favourite distance, as he much prefers sprints. With his confidence from the day before, he was able to attack the swim quite well and he knocked seven seconds off his previous time to swim 5.03.62, finishing as second reserve for the final in 12th place. Saturday was Hall's last race of the competition; having qualified for the 800m this gave her automatic entry to the 1500m freestyle (30 lengths of the long-course 50m pool). Having not swam the event for well over a year, she did a great swim swimming in a time of 17.50.00 – fourth in the junior line-up and 13th overall. Sophie Brown joined the club in Leeds on the final day to swim one of her favourite events 100m butterfly and having been in great racing form over the last couple of months at the County Championships she was hoping for a good swim. Her race was mid-morning and she felt good and relaxed – however during the swim she experienced a swimmer's nightmare when her goggles steamed up and she couldn't see properly. With fly you need to keep your head low in the water but with her goggles out of focus her head was rising too much making the stroke out of rhythm. Brown finished just over two seconds outside her PB in a time of 1.05.04. West's last event of the competition was the 50m freestyle – he was after another PB to gain a hat-trick and he wasn't disappointed. This was another 12th place overall position, with all those finishing above him having competed at the Paralympics.
