A HOMESLESS man has admitted attacking a woman as she walked on the canal towpath last month.

Matthew Williams, 27, pleaded guilty at Gloucester Crown Court to assaulting Janice Giles, causing her actual bodily harm on February 24.

When he appeared in court yesterday, he denied a second charge of common assault on Matthew Jones on the same date.

Prosecutor Lisa Hennessy said the pleas were acceptable.

Ms Giles, 47, suffered bruising and swelling to her face and head when she was attacked.

Defence solicitor Stephen Thomas asked for a pre-sentence report and a psychiatric report on Williams.

Arrangements had already been made via the court's liaison psychiatric nurse for a psychiatrist to see Williams and prepare a report, he said.

Judge William Hart authorised a report as long as the cost to the public purse does not exceed £750.

He remanded Williams in custody pending sentence on May 9.
