Spring may be put on hold after reports of snow in the Forest of Dean during what is said to be the coldest March for 50 years.
And the cold snap is expected to go on.
The Met Office is also issuing a severe weather warning in the South West for Thursday and Friday with heavy rainfall expected.
On average, temperatures have fallen 2.5C below freezing.
The lingering freeze has left local wildlife at risk of starvation, experts have warned.
Bats, hedgehogs and dormice have been affected as their hibernation period has been extended.
