CALLS have been made to lower the speed limit on a Quedgeley road after a motorcyclist died.
A 43-year-old Stroud man was killed when his black Kawasaki motorbike was in collision with a lorry on the A38 at the junction into Kingsway on Saturday.
A post-mortem examination was being carried out yesterday and he was due to be formally identified today.
His passenger, a 21-year-old woman from Stonehouse, was riding pillion and is in a serious but stable condition at Frenchay Hospital in Bristol.
The lorry driver, a 47-year-old man from Taunton, has been bailed until January 11 after being arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. The 70mph speed limit on the dual carriageway will now be investigated after Quedgeley county councillor Jackie Hall called for action.
She said: "It is a real tragedy and my sympathies go to the family.
"I have asked for a full investigation into that whole stretch of road."
Parish councillors said they warned Gloucestershire County Council about their fears up to two years ago.
Graham Smith, vice chairman of Quedgeley Parish Council said: "We were told nothing could be done about it because there hadn't been any fatalities.
"Well now there has and I will be calling for changes.
"It is a 70mph road and that is asking for trouble. It should be 40mph at the lights and 50mph along the rest."
City Councillor Debbie Llewellyn (C, Quedgeley and Fieldcourt) has backed calls for an investigation. She said: "Obviously this has got to be thoroughly looked at. If it is the case that the speed limits are too high, for example, then this needs to be reviewed.
"It is one accident too many, especially with the sad circumstances which have led to this fatality."
