Rose-Anne Galligan will find out on Monday whether she has been selected for the Ireland team for the European Indoor Championships that begin in Gothenburg on Friday, writes Kevin Fahey.
The Gloucester AC international took full advantage of Saturday's hastily arranged meeting in Athlone dubbed the last—chance saloon for Irish athletes, with a superb victory in the 800m that was inside the qualifying standard for the Europeans.
"Rose-Anne needed to run two minutes and 3.5 seconds and she won the race in 2.03.39," said coach David Farrow.
"We obviously know that Rose-Anne was not at her best at both the recent UK and Irish Championships due to stomach problems but on Saturday she was more like her normal self and showed just what she can do."
Galligan, who lives and works in Cheltenham, followed the early pacemaker.
But when she fell away wasn't afraid to hit the front just before the halfway mark.
"Rose-Anne pushed it on very hard and she hung on for a great time," added Farrow.
"Hopefully she has done enough. The meeting was specifically held for Irish athletes to try to get the qualifying standard and Rose-Anne did just that and also won well so hopefully she has done enough to be named in the team."
Galligan's time was a personal best indoors and came just seven days after finishing third in the Irish Championships at the same venue.
